Linux >> 2 Computers over USB
Posted by KaGez on 00:45:00 12-08-2001
I'm trying _very_ stupid things these days, but the nuttiest thing I'm doing now is to try to connect 2 computers with USB. I only have 1 eth card, and I want the 2nd PC to be able to access the net too, over the PC with the eth card. So I will connect them, and pray that it will also work without a USB modem .... anybody ever got such crazy stuff done ?

heh... a couple of years ago you had "null modems" which actually meant you were connecting two PCs over the serial port... sometimes you have multiplayer options in old shareware games, where you can play against another computer through a serial cable...

Perhaps there's something similar for USB, my guess is you'll need some software or kernel option/patch.

looks like you need a USB ethernet adapter to do that over USB. yes, it will work over serial cables, but it's _hell_ slow

It's not that crazy, KaGez. There are kits that make it possible to have a LAN over USB . It's 10Mbit I think.

I know, but these contain such USB ethernet adapters.
anyways, looks like it is also possible over firewire, and that's much faster than 1Gbit =)
I don't have firewire on thin comp tho (

Look what I found: http://www.pearl.de/p/PE8259-USB_Netzwerk.html

It's sorta expensive, yeah... and the page is in german... But i bet there is some way to do this without any special usb-network cable... There _must_ be I mean, you have a USB interface, a USB cable, and if you have a usb interface on each side of the cable, why shouldn't you be able to communicate?
